Cardiac coherence is a breathing technique used by astronauts, fighter pilots, top sportsmen and women, amongst others, to enhance their psychological and physical abilities under stressful conditions.
Following the tracks of pioneering Russian physiologist Evgeny Vaschillo, cardiac coherence was introduced and developed in the United States in 1995 by Stephen Elliot. It was promoted in France from 2003 by Dr David Servan-Schreiber and the Institute of Dr David O'Hare.
The method can be memorized as ‘3-6-5’
Repeat the exercise 3 times a day
Take 6 breaths per minute during the exercise
The exercise takes 5 minutes
Its aim is to help re-establish a balance between the heart, brain and body by synchronising both heart and breathing rates.
It has many benefits which include
